This handcrafted teacup skillfully blends two ancient Chinese crafts: Jingdezhen porcelain and traditional rhinoceros-hide lacquer—also known as pineapple lacquer or tiger-skin lacquer, one of the most revered techniques in Chinese lacquer art.
The teacup is made with natural lacquer. The exterior undergoes weeks of layering black, gold, amber, and ochre lacquer, followed by hand-polishing to create a dense, swirling texture resembling polished agate, tiger stripes, and flowing clouds. Each teacup's texture is unique, making it a true work of art.
The interior is glazed in a deep emerald green, dotted with subtle brown spots. Smooth and non-porous, it's easy to clean and enhances the aroma of the tea. The rich green glaze complements the amber of black tea, the pale jade of green tea, and the golden hue of oolong tea.
This teacup boasts a classic design, modeled after Song Dynasty tea bowls. Its flared rim, thick, heat-retaining walls, and sturdy, high base make it suitable for everyday brewing of fine tea, quiet meditation, or simply a pleasing addition to a bookshelf. Even when filled with hot tea, the lacquered surface remains cool to the touch, offering a comfortable grip.
